Your paediatrician has diagnosed your baby with immature hip joints (hip dysplasia). This is no need for concern when your child receives good orthopaedic treatment. Our Tübingen Hip Abduction Orthosis  according to Professor Dr. Bernau provides the best possible conditions to ensure that your child's hips mature completely and without any problems. You will see how quickly your child becomes accustomed to the new splint.

Seated Squat Position for Undisturbed Development

Hip dysplasia is the most frequent of congenital skeletal deformations. In Germany, two to four percent of all infants are diagnosed with it. Since ultrasound diagnostic tools have been introduced, it can be detected immediately after birth. And that is very fortunate, since timely treatment of hip dysplasia almost always results in complete healing.

The most advantageous hip position for this purpose is the so-called seated squat position. It is the same position the child assumes in the womb before birth. It results in the fastest possible undisturbed maturing of the hip joint. The Tübingen Hip Abduction Orthosis , which has proven itself for over 20 years in clinics and in practice, was developed for this purpose. The splint flexes the infant’s hip joint at an angle in excess of 90° which corresponds to the spontaneous flexed position, and spreads them slightly. This is merely an extension of the pre-birth phase. It allows your baby's hips to mature under the same advantageous conditions as they would in the womb.

Your child’s natural movements will not be restricted any more than necessary. You also do not have to be concerned that the splint may cause problems for your baby’s back. The infant’s spontaneous kicking and the alternating movement of the long shoulder harnesses helps the child counteract the development of kyphosis. Every mother will be familiar with this activity from pregnancy.

Your doctor will adapt the Tübingen Hip Abduction Orthosis  and explain to you exactly how to handle the orthosis. Within a very short period of time, you will be well versed in putting the splint on and taking it off because you only have to use the hook-and-loop closure and the white closures. Most children get used to the new situation quickly; some of the older children only after some initial protest during the first few days.

Regular Checkups

Your doctor will check the alignment of the hip joints and the position and size of the hip flexion splint during regular checkups. He or she will make adjustments according to the growth of your child.

In order to make hygienic daily handling easier, we made the splint from washable materials. You can easily remove and wash the terry cloth shoulder harness covers.

Please follow the directions provided by your doctor precisely. For more information, see our video or DVD.
