German Design Award for the Lumbo TriStep from Otto Bock.

The Lumbo TriStep back orthosis from Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH has received the German Design Award in silver during the opening of the international “Ambiente” trade fair in Frankfurt. In its statement, the jury mainly emphasised the favourable combination of materials and design.
One of the defining characteristics of the orthosis is its innovative lamella structure with individual plastic elements that stabilise the spine. By removing individual elements, it facilitates a systematic three-stage lumbar spine rehabilitation process. As the degree of support is reduced in each stage of treatment, the patient's mobility is systematically increased.
The orthosis features a high level of wearer comfort thanks to its lightweight construction. Furthermore, the Lumbo TriStep convinced the jury with its quality and functional characteristics which are of key importance in medical aids. “The design also radiates honesty, making the therapeutic effect transparent with open supporting elements,” so the jury statement. The orthosis assures the necessary characteristics through the choice of materials. Non-essential components were not included.
Since the design is essential for the therapeutic success of an orthosis in addition to a good fit, Otto Bock has developed the principle “form follows function” to become “form is function”. After all, only those medical aids used readily and regularly by the patient can contribute to optimum rehabilitation success.
The Lumbo TriStep, which was developed in cooperation between Otto Bock and Resolut Design, already received the red dot design award and the Saxony State Prize for Design in 2007. In 2008, it earned the GOOD DESIGN™ Award in Chicago.
