Anterior knee pain: What is that?

When someone is suffering from pain in the anterior area of the knee joint, the diagnosis often reads patellofemoral pain syndrome.

This means that the patient may experience a dislocation of the kneecap (patella). Usually the kneecap glides along the thigh bone as if on a track. In the case of the patellofemoral pain syndrome, however, it slips outwards and causes pain.

This occurs especially when the knee is slightly bent (up to 30°), because the osseous tracking of the patella is low in this area. The patellar joint experiences an overload. In case of severe flexion, however (> 30°), the patella glides while experiencing more support. The risk of maltracking is low.
