International Day of Persons with Disabilities: more diversity and inclusion in the world of work

Ottobock joins “The Valuable 500” initiative

On 3 December 1993, the United Nations proclaimed an annual day of events to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. “The Valuable 500” is pursuing this same goal. This initiative is the world’s largest CEO network dedicated to diversity. In addition to Philipp Schulte-Noelle from Ottobock, CEOs from companies including Audi, Coca-Cola and Google are also part of the network.

A commitment to diversity

“Diversity is in our DNA. We regularly raise public awareness of this topic through the work we do on behalf of Paralympic sports. I’m delighted that we are building on our commitment to a diverse, more inclusive society by joining the Valuable 500 community,” says Philipp Schulte-Noelle. The initiative combines the influence of the member companies with the goal of increasing participation by people with disabilities in the world of work.

Boosting inclusion through independence

For over 100 years, inclusion has been at the heart of the international medtech company’s work. Its goal is to improve the quality of life of its patients and users, and to enable them to live independent daily lives. This includes aspects such as integration and participation in society and the world of work, equal opportunities and equality, and respectful collaboration. “We want to employ more people with disabilities in future. Increasing diversity fosters different perspectives and points of view,” says Schulte-Noelle. “This enriches our company.”

Promoting diversity in the workplace

To achieve this aim, the company will also place a greater focus on people with disabilities during the recruiting process. In addition, Ottobock continues to work to improve accessibility within the company. The members of an Inclusion Council will regularly exchange ideas and develop additional measures to drive these efforts at the international level.
