Cleaning prosthetic liners daily reduces odors and keeps the liner free from bacteria. Two liners are recommended for patients so that one can dry completely while the other is worn. Washing the liner daily is also a great opportunity for the patient to inspect the liner for tears, cracks, or other damage. The following cleaning process works for most liner types. 

1. Turn the liner inside out and hand-wash daily

2. Use a ph-balanced and alcohol-free soap

3. Thoroughly rinse with clean water to remove ALL soap residue

4. Turn the liner right-side out (especially important for liners with fabric cover)

5. Allow the liner to dry completely using a drying stand or by placing a lint-free towel inside the liner and laying it flat

NEVER use alcohol on a urethane liner. It will degrade the material. 

Correctly donning a liner will keep the liner healthier for a longer period of time. It helps to avoid tears from fingernails and pulling on the proximal part of the liner. It also protects the skin, ensuring that no air is trapped between the liner and the skin. Ottobock recommends the following donning process.

1. Turn the liner inside out

2. For uncovered liners, spray a small amount of water into the inverted liner to allow the liner to slide on itself

3. Align the anterior aspect of the liner and the line and place the end of the liner firmly on the distal end of the limb

4. Roll the liner onto the limb carefully with the knee slightly flexed

5. Remove any air pockets by running hands along the liner from distal to proximal
