Creative Orthotic Fabrication with Orfit Industries
This workshop caters to a mixed-level audience, spanning from intermediate to advanced practitioners, and focuses on the creation of immobilisation and mobilisation orthoses for the upper extremity. Debby Schwartz will tap into her long experience as a practicing hand therapist and provide detailed demonstrations of splint fabrications. Every participant will be actively engaged in the fabrication process. This hands-on approach aims to enhance participants' practical skills and confidence in crafting professional-grade, comfortable splints by using the latest materials from Orfit Industries.
Who is this workshop for?
This course is suitable for therapists possessing intermediate orthotic fabrication skills who are keen to explore new materials and gain practical tips for upper extremity orthotic fabrication.
Objectives
Recognise the mechanical principles involved in fabrication of low temperature thermoplastic splints for the upper extremity.
Identify the properties and characteristics of various splinting materials.
Identify and critique a variety of splinting materials for different purposes.
Recognise how to design, fabricate, apply, fit and train in orthotic devices used to enhance occupational performance.
Gain knowledge of tips and tricks for the fabrication of immobilization and mobilization splinting.
Learn time saving tips and tricks that are immediately applicable in the hand therapy clinic.
The following orthoses will be fabricated:
Dynamic - Static Progressive Extension Orthosis for the PIP joint - Isoforce outrigger
Static Progressive PIP/DIP Flexion Orthosis
Orficast Orthoses- all types of fingers orthoses (including mallet, anti-swan neck, boutonnierre, anti -claw orthosis)
Orficast MORE orthoses for thumb and forearm- based orthoses (CMC Short opponens orthosis, long opponens orthosis)
Demonstration of Muenster orthosis with Orficast More 30 cm and Orficast More 6 cm
Debby Schwartz
Debby is a certified hand therapist with over 37 years of experience as a practicing clinician. She works with Orfit Industries America to promote product awareness and splinting education. Debby is an active member of American Society of Hand Therapists and has participated in International Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy meetings as well. She has presented on a variety of hand therapy topics both at national and international conferences and has written many articles for hand therapy publications, including the British Journal of Hand Therapy, ADVANCE for OT, www.exploringhandtherapy.com, and several research studies for the Journal of Hand Therapy. Debby regularly conducts orthotic fabrication workshops for beginner, intermediate, and advanced clinicians as well as introductory classes for occupational therapy students in university programs. Debby completed her doctoral studies in Occupational Therapy at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo, Utah. She is currently writing several book chapters for hand therapy references.
