Anja is paralysed on the right side of her body following a stroke. Before this turning point, the single mother of a teenager worked full time in the medical sector and was proud to be able to manage her life efficiently and independently. Suddenly confronted with new challenges, Anja had to learn how to put smooth routines and perfect housekeeping behind her. “When you have to do things with one hand, you inevitably learn to be more easygoing and to compromise. If I simply can’t get a piece of clothing over my head, for example, I pick something else. And if I can’t get the laundry done today, I just put it off until tomorrow.” Anja knows from experience that bad days are followed by better ones, so she has little use for regretting her lost abilities. A resident of Berlin by choice, she also focuses on what is possible here and now in her free time. Going to the cinema with her son, a stroll around town with her best friend or visiting a beer garden with her new love – Anja has learned to find out about potentially difficult aspects in advance when she wants to visit a certain location. With this knowledge and her manoeuvrable Juvo B4 power wheelchair, she is well equipped for almost any eventuality. Cobblestones and curbs don’t faze her, and neither do sloping terrain or narrow passages in bars and pubs.

Kristina’s greatest passion is acting as a consultant for accessible building projects. After deciding to move to Berlin, she has been successfully involved in various projects for years. So it’s little wonder that the student also wants to make this her professional future. Kristina uses her Juvo B4 power wheelchair to get around every day due to a progressive neuromuscular condition. She left her home in the countryside for life in the big city years ago. 

It quickly became clear that there is still a need for improvement in terms of accessibility, even at university premises in Berlin. Kristina’s goal is to highlight this need and bring about solutions. This includes raising awareness of the topic among those around her. Some adversity notwithstanding, the desire to bring things to a positive conclusion always wins out with Kristina. Resignation is a word that has no place in her vocabulary.
