Felicja's K C-Leg Story.
Felicja’s Way Forward.
Felicja, 13, from Surrey, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 9. Her tumour was removed and a knee replacement gave her a temporary path forward. Unfortunately, an infection complicated her recovery, so her family turned to the Prosthetic Rehabilitation Unit at Stanmore, who provided her with several treatment options. Driven by a desire to live a more active life, Felicja decided to have her leg amputated. Just after her tenth birthday, she underwent an above-knee amputation of her left leg.
At first, she used a mechanical knee and then a blade. After using this combination for a while, Felicja was given the opportunity to trial a C-Leg 4 microprocessor knee via the NHS England MPK Policy and in 2023, at the age of 11, Felicja received her very own. The C-Leg 4 features patented technology with proven performance, enabling Felicja to live the healthy, active life she wants. It adapts to the user's unique gait pattern and walking speeds, allowing Felicja to focus on where she wants to go, not on her next step.
“She can do everything she wants to do,” explains her beaming dad, Bartosz. “And she does. She finds it much easier to use and it doesn’t require as much effort for her to walk.” Not only does Felicja walk incredibly well with a natural gait pattern, she also walks fast and covers longer distances with ease. At school, she moves from class to class with confidence and like most teenage girls, she enjoys socialising with her friends at the park or walking around town clothes shopping.
“She wears her C-Leg every day at school. She’ll put it on at six in the morning and won’t take it off until bedtime. She’s used it so much it’s looking a bit battered now!” laughs Bartosz.
But Felicja doesn’t care. She’s too busy trying out rugby and football at school. When she’s not on the move, she’s scrolling TikTok, listening to music, or hunting for the next addition to her growing wardrobe. Music, fashion, sport—her world is colourful, loud and limitless.
There’s something about Felicja, a kind of quiet fire. She doesn’t tell you she’s strong, she shows you, every time she puts on her C-Leg and walks out the door to live her life.
Not back to normal. Forward to her version of it.
