William's Kenevo Story.

William’s Brave Battle and Big Impact

William Reckless, aged 9, is an inspiring young fundraiser from Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, whose remarkable journey has touched hearts across the UK.

In January 2020, at just three years old, William was struck by sepsis. He was initially treated at King’s Mill Hospital before being transferred to Nottingham Children’s Hospital at Queen’s Medical Centre. There, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was placed in an induced coma. Despite a grim prognosis, William survived, however, the sepsis caused irreversible damage, leading to the amputation of both legs and nine fingers. His recovery involved intensive treatments, including dialysis and chest drains.

Determined to give back to the hospital that saved his life, William embarked on a fundraising challenge in March 2024, marking four years since his amputations. He completed a four-mile journey, walking two miles with his prostheses and handcycling a further two more. This challenge was especially significant, as he had previously only managed to walk 1.2 miles. His efforts raised over £8,000 for the Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

William's dedication and resilience earned him national recognition. In September 2024, he was named Young Fundraiser of the Year at the GoCardless JustGiving Awards. The ceremony, held in London, celebrated his incredible achievements alongside other inspiring fundraisers. William's story resonated with so many people, highlighting the profound impact one young individual can make.

In November 2023, William was given the opportunity to trial the Kenevo microprocessor knee (MPK), at just 7 years old he was the youngest person to ever trial microprocessor knees.

The Kenevo microprocessor knee provides remarkable safety with it’s ability to reduce the risk of falls with its stumble recovery feature. It can also improve the user’s posture as it gives a more natural walking style and generally makes day to day life a little easier for a child with bi-lateral prostheses.

The Kenevo is also the lightest microprocessor knee available, weighing just 920g and designed with a small build height, which makes it the perfect choice for a young child like William.

However to master using the microprocessor knees would take a lot of hard-work and perseverance. Of course, in true William style, from day one he surpassed expectations with his determination. “The progress he made in the first week was amazing to see. Watching him stand tall, walking the most naturally we have seen since he lost his legs, has been emotional to say the least,” commented his proud mum, Gemma.

William’s parents explored their options of accessing these MPKs via the NHS and with the support of their prosthetist at Nottingham, William took delivery of his own Kenevo MPKs in April 2025. The NHS England MPK Policy is available to above knee amputees in both adults and children and gives amputees the opportunity to experience the advanced technology and performance to live the life they want by improving their mobility and gaining independence.

In the short time that William has had his microprocessor knees his confidence has grown hugely. He is wearing them as much as he can and even took them on his family holiday to Spain where he mastered slopes and stairs and walked around the zoo on a day out. He is enjoying the safety they provide which means he can play with his little sister Georgia without having to think about his every movement. “He loves the outdoors and being active”, said Gemma. “We are so grateful he is surrounded by people who believe in him and want to help him reach his potential. His determination makes my heart burst with pride.”

William's journey from a life-threatening illness to becoming a celebrated fundraiser exemplifies courage and determination. His story continues to inspire and motivate others to overcome adversity and make a positive difference.
