HCSC now covers (K2) Microprocessor Knees per Medicare’s new Local Coverage Determination & Policy Article
AUSTIN, Texas, February 5, 2026 — We’re excited to announce that effective 01/01/2026, HCSC (including BCBS of Texas, Illinois, Montana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico) has updated its Lower-Limb Prosthetics policy which includes Microprocessor Knees.
HCSC now covers (K2) Microprocessor Knees per Medicare’s new Local Coverage Determination & Policy Article, and it includes Medicare’s revised, more-generous K-Level descriptions.
Additionally, the following restrictive language has been removed from the policy:
Decisions about the potential benefits of MPKs involve multiple factors including activity levels and the patient's physical and cognitive ability. An amputee's need for daily ambulation of at least 400 continuous yards, daily and frequent ambulation at variable cadence or on uneven terrain (e.g., gravel, grass, curbs, etc.), and daily and frequent use of ramps and/or stairs (especially stair descent) should be considered as part of the decision. Typically, daily and frequent need of 2 or more of these activities would be needed to show benefit.”
This should make it much easier for lower-functioning amputees with HCSC insurance to get MPKs. We look forward to the opportunities this will bring for amputees in these regions.
